2025 HIGHLIGHT ATTRACTIONS
On September 24, 2025, Buffalo Maritime Center’s replica of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief will embark on a Bicentennial Voyage to New York City! The 33-day voyage, guided by staff and volunteers from the Buffalo Maritime Center (BMC), will commemorate Governor DeWitt Clinton’s historic 1825 journey from Buffalo to New York Harbor, 200 years after the inaugural trip. The Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief will be making stops at 28 ports along the Erie Canal, Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. The epic voyage concludes at Pier 26 in New York City with a commemoration on the official Bicentennial completion date, October 26, 2025. Don’t miss out on a chance to witness history!
BUFFALO MARITIME CENTER is a living workshop where volunteers, students and master craftspeople come together to build, restore and maintain wooden boats using both traditional and modern techniques. Through educational programs, public exhibits and large-scale projects like the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief, the BMC fosters a deeper appreciation for the region’s waterways, craftsmanship and history, and inspires preserving maritime culture and exploring the waterways of Western New York. 60 Arthur St, Buffalo 716 881-0111 buffalomaritimecenter.org

BIG DITCH BULLETIN BOARD
Big Ditch Brewing Company and Buffalo Maritime Center are proud to launch LONG HAUL Honey Lager, the official beer of the Bicentennial Voyage of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief!
About the beer:
Erie Canal “long hauls” were multi-day boat trips traversing great distances across the state. In fall 2025, the BMC replica canal boat, the Seneca Chief, will embark on its own commemorative long haul down the canal, and this beer will be along for the ride and available at select stops along the way.
Long Haul is a lager brewed with 6-row barley, New York State hops, clover honey, and spruce tips, ingredients that were often used for brewing beer in the 19th century.
So, as you follow the historical voyage of the Seneca Chief, and while it is docked in any of the 28 ports-of-call along the way, be sure to stop by a local tap house and ask for a Long Haul. This unique brew may only be available during this special voyage celebrating the Bicentennial, and is a perfect way to participate in the celebration. “Raise your glass to the good times, and cherish the memories they bring…. Cheers!”
THIS LIST CONTAINS THE CURRENT ROSTER OF PARTICIPANTS IN THE EMPIRE STATE TRAIL AMERICA’S PILGRIMAGE PASSPORT PROGRAM (ESTAP) PILOT PROGRAM THIS YEAR.
These entities are identified as ESTAP participants by displaying a program window decal and in 2025, a Bicentennial Celebration decal. By patronizing any business, utilizing any service, visiting any attraction or participating in activity listed, personalized stamps are available to affix in EST program passports.

BUSINESS OWNER PERSONAL STORY
Hello,
I’m Marianne… the owner
So was opening a coffee shop and an event space a lifelong dream? Definitely not. But life threw me some curveballs that landed me here and I couldn’t be more thankful. After years working “for the man” in marketing and advertising, a seven year stint as the General Manager of a new marina, and raising a wonderfully successful son, life got weird. Cancer hit, and shortly after that an untimely and painful end to a long term relationship. Pile on Covid and the shit storm was real. But, a life-saving stem cell transplant cured my health on 6/2/20 (my new birthday, thanks Bro), and my friends, family, and Harper Lee, my English Cream Golden Retriever puppy, cured my heart.
Do something for yourself they said, put all your talent and experience toward something of your own they said, open a coffee shop they said. So, I sold my house of 34 years, and threw my heart and soul into Neutral Ground Coffeehouse. After 7 months of regular WTF moments, designing, laboring with the help of family (thanks sis) and friends, blowing my budget and learning that starting your own business is hard, here I am. And I’m forever grateful for all those curveballs, my shit storm is over.
~ Marianne Warfle Harper, Neutral Ground Coffeehouse

In memorial of Dr. Sally Reach Wagner
On behalf of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, and all of us who are part of the Gage Center family, we are saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner on June 11th. She wasn't just our founder, but a mentor and friend. Her depth of knowledge about Matilda Gage and passion for social justice issues was infinite. All who knew Sally, who heard her speak or read her books, were encircled by her presence. We never came away from a conversation with Sally without learning something about Matilda, the world around us, or ourselves. We will hold her as an inspiration as we continue the work that she started. She was a gift to our lives and she will always be in our hearts.
The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation is honored to announce that the Roesch Wagner family is in the process of establishing a separate fund dedicated specifically to preserving and advancing the full scope of Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner's life’s work. This includes not only Sally's contributions to the Gage Foundation, but also her decades of feminist scholarship, activism, writing, public speaking, and her extensive archives. The details of this fund are still being finalized, and more information about its structure, goals, and how to contribute will be shared soon. The Gage Foundation is aware of and supports the creation of this separate fund and will be working in collaboration with the family as plans take shape.
Sally's family and all of us Gage are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and generosity you've shown uring this time.

We stand in solidarity with the Onondaga Nation and support their continuing struggle for the recognition of this Land as theirs. We are committed to the work to dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery, the Papal Bulls which gave religious sanction to the taking of the Land by the European settler people. BUSINESS STORY OF THE MONTH – ROME NY
KEATON & LLOYD BOOKSHOP opened its doors on October 21, 2021 and originally carried a wide variety of literature and bookish goods for folks of all ages and backgrounds, becoming a beloved part of the Rome community. The bookshop’s loyal mascot, Carl LaFong, was an integral part of the operation, dutifully greeting visitors and serving as a valuable marketing asset. In July 2024, an EF-2 tornado struck the City of Rome, causing serious damage to over 80 buildings in the immediate vicinity. The bookshop building lost its roof, suffered water damage, had copious amounts of internal damage, lost most of its furnishings, and much more. With its building unusable, Keaton & Lloyd operated a series of pop-up book sales after the closure. Carl LaFong found employment at the historic Capitol Theatre, where he came to enjoy a fulfilling career as a Theater Cat. Plans for the business were made, but stalled with the insurance settlements to be reached for the building’s restoration causing any agreements made to fall through several times over.
Today, Keaton & Lloyd Bookshop is planning a comeback, with many positive changes in the works. Bookshop operations have been lovingly adopted by the Capitol Arts Complex, one of the most vibrant nonprofit arts organizations in Central New York. The Capitol is painstakingly working to restore the building at 236 W. Dominick Street, which it has owned for many years. Its goal is to establish its own version of Keaton & Lloyd in the fall of 2025. The bookshop will have the same good vibes, with a few new twists. As work is tackled, the building will serve a variety of important functions, including a rehearsal space for the Capitol’s “SummerStage” musical theater program and a dealer’s room for the “Capitolfest” film festival. The Capitol will offer Carl LaFong a part-time position at the bookshop, since Mr. LaFong also enjoys his theater gig and would like a hybrid role.
Operating as a nonprofit program of the Capitol opens the bookshop up to many new opportunities! The Capitol looks forward to engaging members of the community as volunteers to assist with bookshop operations. It will also be able to apply for grant funding for literacy programming and utilize the bookshop to help promote its other extraordinary events.

Organic Farms:
ORGANIC VALLEY COOPERATIVE’S philosophy of bringing together organic farmers, who are neighbors, friends and there for each other whenever they are needed. Organic Farms new program is designed to help Organic Valley reach carbon neutrality through on-farm sustainability programs that meet, or go beyond. This important and timely philosophy is beautifully exemplified at the NY Organic Valley Farms listed below:
CASLER FARMS owner Dan Casler’s family comes from a long line of farmers. So when it came time to choose his own career path, he naturally got into the family business. “I like basically what I’m doing or else I wouldn’t do it.” Casler has worked over the past 20 years as a farmer and transitioned into Casler Organic Farms on Paradise Road in 2006. The farm — though it has grown and changed over the years — has been in his family for nine generations. Great way to spend a day! 130 Staring Lane, Little Falls, 315 867-4733
ROOTSTOCK ORGANIC FARM is where you discover how a young NY woman took a tremendous leap, during Covid, from an eliminated office job into finding a job on axfarm—transforming into into a successful career in organic dairy farming. Melissa Moody (and her dog, Waymore), is a member of the exclusive 1st generation female farmers, producing high-quality Organic Valley milk. Rootstock@organicvalley.com
HU-HILL ORGANIC FARM is a great example of a locally owned and operated farm producing superior organic meats by maintaing fresh clean pastures, using management intensive rotational grazing, organic grains, and responsible husbandry, all which create a low-stress life for all livestock. GARDEN OF EVE ORGANIC FARM was founded by Chris and Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht founded in 2001, dedicated to providing delicious organic vegetables, fruits and beautiful flowers and to “making changes in the world by living them.”
Chris grew up on a dairy farm in upstate New York. He spent ten years in the world of clean water advocacy, working as an organizer and manager for the nonprofit group Citizens Campaign for the Environment. He graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with a degree in Geology.
Eve worked on horse farms and had a vegetable garden as a kid, and always sought to spend most of her time outdoors. While starting the farm, Eve worked as a land preservation advocate with the North Fork Environmental Council and as Principal Planner for the Town of Southampton. She holds a BA from Harvard in Environmental Science and a MS in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Chris and Eve met in 2000 and together they started a large garden on about 1/4 acre of land in Riverhead, Long Island which they worked together on evenings and weekends after coming home from their full-time jobs.
Invited to sell some extra produce (zucchini!) at a local farmers market they made $40 and were launched on their farming careers. Since then, they have expanded and now grow 50 acres of certified organic vegetables, flowers, raise 1000 pastured laying hens, and oversee almost 20 farm team members. Garden of Eve sells produce through an on-farm Farm Market, 4 farmers markets, and nearly 1,000 households participating in their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs at 20 locations in New York City and on Long Island.
